Mixtapes and mix CD's evoke memories of winding plastic cassettes, decorating metal disks, writing down track lists, and creating cover art. Compared to the online playlists that are easily created today, mixtapes and mix CD's required a great deal of time, effort, and care. And ultimately, this made the act of sharing them a far more meaningful and personal exchange.
With the rising of popularity of music streaming services, the practice of curating and sharing music is becoming a less personalized and creative process. However, I believe that there is a lot of potential in the ways we can utilize these digital platforms and ultimately make them our own.
This project aims to make music sharing personal and tangible again through the idea of the "mixcode". Mixcodes encourage the use of accessible, web-based platforms as canvases for online playlists and the use of QR codes for reintroducing a tangible component to music sharing.
For me, exchanging music has always been a way of communicating friendship and love. In many ways, this project allowed me to reminisce on the joy of exchanging music as I was growing up and to imagine ways of revitalizing this practice in my life today.
